Claude for accountants: What it actually does

“Are you using AI?” It doesn’t matter if you are at a family dinner or a work conference – the question is going to come up. And if you are reading this well we will assume you have dabbled at least with ChatGPT. This article is about Claude though and what it can do (and is doing) for accountants using it well. If you are trying to run a busy practice, you've probably seen a lot about ChatGPT, but there's another AI that is fast becoming the goto choice for finance and accounting professionals: Claude. I've been teaching accountants and bookkeepers how to use Claude for a while now and we love it and the feedback from our webinar participants is that they also love what it does for them.

Why Claude?

Every AI tool claims to be the smartest, the fastest, the most accurate. Fair- that's marketing. But there are a few things about Claude that truly matter for accounting:

It reads a lot and it reads carefully.

Claude can hold an massive amount of information in a single chat - think a full year of financial statements, an entire piece of tax legislation or a client contract... all at once. That means you're not chopping documents into pieces and hoping Claude remembers what you told it three messages ago.

It's built to be careful with facts.

Anthropic who make Claude have managed to make Claude less prone to confidently making things up - a big deal when the output might end up in front of a client or a regulator. I CAN’T BE MORE CLEAR ABOUT THIS… That doesn't mean you skip the review step (you always review), but it's a great starting point.

It shows its working.

Ask Claude to explain a variance, summarise a contract clause or build a model, and it will generally walk you through the reasoning - not just hand you an answer and hope you trust it. If it references something eg a rate or fact, you can easily ask for its source.

What about Xero?

If you're a Xero user, this is where it gets genuinely exciting and it's the reason I am loving Claude and so happy to be teaching the system to accountants. Xero and Claude announced a multi-year partnership in March 2026, and the live integration went out to all subscribers in May. That means Claude can sit inside your Xero data directly- cash position, overdue invoices, contacts, reports, margins and more through an official, permission-based connector. You control what it can see so it doesn't get free reign over your data.

Here's some of the things we love about it and have shared on past webinars, because this is where the real hours get saved:

  • Divisional P&L's
    • On demand instead of by hand. If you're manually pulling divisional profit and loss reports every month, that's often two hours you don't need to spend. The trick isn't really about Claude, it's about your Xero tracking categories. Set them up properly once (and there's a real difference between a single-level and multi-level structure, and it matters more than people think), and you can pull a clean P&L export and hand it to Claude for variance analysis and client-ready commentary in minutes, NOT hours. Same workflow whether you're doing this for one client or ten… with a proper audit trail behind it, not just a spreadsheet someone signed off on.
  • BAS quality process.
    • Manual BAS review fails in the usual ways as when it relies on one person's knowledge, human error creeps in and missed data inconsistency is big ATO risk. In my webinars, I walk through how to build a proper BAS checklist covering the handful of things that actually matter, then use Claude (alongside tools like Syft) as a quality control, eg flagging exceptions for human review rather than making you check everything by hand. You still sign off. You just sign off with confidence and a trail to back it up.
  • Daily admin
    • Beyond the big workflows, there's a whole raft of daily busywork that we all get stuck on eg emails, client summaries, notes, first-pass data checks… that doesn't need to be a partner or senior accountant's time. Claude handles the first draft and YOU handle the judgement call.

NOTE: None of this requires you to be technical. If you can export a report from Xero and paste it into a chat, you can run these types of workflows.

Where Claude can be used in your workflow

Claude isn't just a chat window you open in a browser tab. The company behind Claude has been gradually building it into the places accountants and bookkeepers already work:

  • Excel
    • Claude can sit directly in your spreadsheet, read your formulas, debug errors and build out models - with full visibility into what it's changing and why, rather than just spitting out numbers you have to double-check line by line.
  • Word and PowerPoint.
    • For drafting board reports, management commentary, or client-facing documents.
  • Claude Cowork
    • A workspace which connects Claude to tools your practice likely already runs on - Gmail, Google Drive, QuickBooks, and more - so it can actually retrieve and act on real data instead of you copying and pasting everything in.
  • Claude for Small Business
    • A more recent addition, plugs Claude into PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, and DocuSign with a set of ready-made workflows Every one of these stops for your approval before anything actually sends, posts or pays - so you (or your client) stay firmly in control.

What this means for your practice - and your clients

For a lot of accountants, the interesting benefit isn't "AI writes my emails." It's the busywork that eats your day - reconciliations, first draft P&L comments, chasing paperwork, prepping - can now get a genuine first go done by AI, with you reviewing and signing off rather than starting from scratch each time. For client-facing practices, that's time back for the advisory conversations that actually grow the relationship - and the ones clients are increasingly expecting you to have.

Where to start?

PLEASE - If you're new to AI, don't give Claude your client data and access on day one. Start with read-only tasks - summarising a document, drafting commentary you'll edit, building a first draft model you'll check - before moving into anything that touches live client data or sends anything externally. That's exactly how we approach it in our webinars: practical, low-risk, step by step.

Want to see it in action?

Reading blog articles about it only gets you so far - the real value sinks in when you watch it work on a real accounting scenario. Each week, we run a live webinar walking accountants and bookkeepers through exactly how to put Claude and other systems to work in their practice - real examples, real prompts, real workflows. You can also watch my previous sessions on demand here. We have many accountants who come to our live sessions week after week (using our membership program) and are really seeing amazing changes in their practices when implementing AI carefully but smart!
